Set up fringes, globals, and incentives
You can set up the shared values a budget's lines depend on: globals, fringes, groups, units, currencies, contractual charges, and incentive credits. Change a rate once in the setup, and every line that uses it updates.
To open the setup, in a project, click Budget in the sidebar, then click Setup. Each setup applies to the scenario that's open.

Add and change setup rows
Each section of the setup is a table. In any section, do any of the following:
- Add a row: Click next to the section's title.
- Change a value: Click the cell, then enter the new value.
- Copy a row: Click Duplicate setup row .
- Delete a row: Click Delete , then confirm.
Deleted rows move to the project's Trash, where you can restore them. If you delete a global, formulas that use it keep its current value. See Restore deleted items from the Trash.
Define globals
A global is a named value, such as SHOOTDAYS, that you can use in any line's formula.
- Under Globals, enter a Name and an Expression, such as
20orSHOOTDAYS/5.
The Value column shows the result. - To fill a global from the production instead of typing it, choose Production link in Source, then choose a statistic in Link:
SHOOT_DAYS,SCENE_COUNT,INT_COUNT, orEXT_COUNT. - When the schedule or script changes, click to update linked globals.
The budget never changes on its own. Linked globals update only when you refresh them.
If you delete a global that formulas use, those formulas keep the global's current value.
Set up fringes
A fringe is a cost added on top of a line, such as payroll taxes or union benefits.
- Under Fringes, enter a Code, such as
FICA. - In Type, choose % for a percentage of the line or Flat for a fixed amount.
- Enter the Rate. If the fringe stops applying above an amount, enter it as the Cutoff.
The Total column shows how much the fringe adds to the budget.
To apply a fringe to a line, select it in the line's settings. See Build a budget.
Use groups, units, and currencies
- Groups: Collect lines you want to total or treat together, such as everything shot on location. Deselect In total to leave a group's lines out of the budget total.
- Units: Name the units lines are counted in, such as days or weeks, with the number of Hours each represents.
- Currencies: To add a currency, enter its code, such as
EUR, then click . Enter its Rate (per base). To change the budget's base currency, click Make base next to a currency; FilmKit recalculates every exchange rate around it.
Under Locations, list the places you'll film for budgeting purposes, each with a Name and a Jurisdiction.
Add contractual charges
A contractual charge is an amount added to the whole budget, such as insurance or a production fee.
- Under Contractual charges, enter a Name.
- In Type, choose % or Flat, then enter the Value.
- To leave part of the budget out of the charge, enter an Excl. amount or choose Excl. groups.
Add credits and incentives
Use Credits (incentives) to record tax credits and other incentives. The budget shows the result as the Net total.
- Under Credits (incentives), click , then enter a name for the credit.
- Enter a Cap and a Discount % if they apply.
- To leave fringes out of the qualifying spend, click Excluded fringes, then select them.
- Click Add credit row, then choose a Type:
- Group: The credit applies to a group's lines. Choose the Group and enter the percentage.
- Flat: A fixed amount. Enter the Flat amount.
- To limit the row, choose a Cap type and enter a Cap value.
Reuse a setup in other projects
You can save the setup as a kit in the space library and apply it to budgets in any project in the space.
At the top of the Setup view, do one of the following:
- Save this setup: Enter a kit name, such as
House fringes, then click Save setup to library. - Apply a saved kit: Click Apply from library, then choose the kit. Rows with the same name are replaced.
