Set up logging
Before the first day, you can set up the Setup tab of On Set with your cameras, cards, sound rolls, and lenses, and the conventions the production logs by. Everything here is shared by every device logging the production, so a new take starts from the same defaults on every phone and laptop.
To open it, click On Set in the sidebar of a project, then click Setup. Choose a section from the list on the left (or from the menu at the top on a phone).

Add cameras and rolls
- In Setup, click Cameras & rolls, then click New camera.
- Enter a Label (for example,
A), then enter the Body, or find it with Find a camera model. - Choose a Colour, then set the Defaults for new takes, such as frame rate, shutter angle, ISO, white balance, and LUT.
- Click Save.
To start a roll when a card goes in, click New roll on the camera. Starting a new roll closes the current one, and clip numbers restart on the new roll. To manage a roll, click its and choose Close roll, Reopen roll, Close clip gaps, or Delete. To rename a roll, click its name and enter a new one.
Close clip gaps renumbers the live takes on a roll from clip 1, in clip order, so a deleted take doesn't leave a gap. Deleted takes keep their numbers.
To add sound rolls, click Sound rolls, then click New sound roll. Starting a new sound roll closes the current one.
Add lenses
- In Setup, click Lenses, then click New lens.
- Enter a Name, or find the lens with Find a lens model.
- Choose the Kind: Prime, Zoom, or Special.
- Enter the focal length, plus any of Serial number, Close focus, Front diameter, and Squeeze.
- If the lens is borrowed or a special, select Borrowed / special.
- Click Save.
A prime fills in its focal length on every take. A zoom asks for the focal length on each take, and the wrap check flags a zoom take without one.

Review camera events
Click Camera events to see every rejam, restart, card error, overheat, tech hold, body swap, and timecode check logged on the production. To log one from here, click Log camera event.
Build the quick notes library
Quick notes are phrases with short codes, such as fb for Focus buzz. In the take sheet, you click a phrase to add it, or type its code in the notes to expand it.
- In Setup, click Quick notes.
- Enter a Code and a Phrase, then click Add phrase.
To change a phrase or its code, edit it in the list.
Add custom take fields
You can add up to six fields of your own to every take, such as Wardrobe or Weather.
- In Setup, click Custom fields.
- Enter a Field name, then click Add field.
The field appears under Custom fields in the take sheet.
Use the calculators
Click Calculators for camera-department maths: Record time, Battery runtime, Depth of field, Field of view, Exposure compensation, Slow motion, Timelapse, and Flicker-safe shutter.
To start from a real take, choose it in the Take menu; the fields fill in from the take, then from the camera's defaults. Some calculators can send their result back to the take, such as Send focus distance to take.

Change the production's logging settings
- In Setup, click Production.
- Under Conventions, set any of the following:
- Slating convention: US — scene / take or UK — slate / take. This changes what the slate's first field is called.
- Distance unit: Metres or Feet.
- After a false take: Burn the number or Reuse the number.
- Shutter: Log shutter as Angles or Speeds.
- Default frame rate and Night cutoff hour: Until the cutoff hour, a take still counts for the previous shooting day.
- Under Log rules, choose whether to Merge cross-camera rows that share a slate, which Smartfill groups a new take carries over from the last one, and which Required take fields the wrap check flags when empty.
- Under Crew and Episodic, enter the names and numbers that print on the camera report.
